When I was applying to different incubators, the first stage after someone looks at your pitch deck and considers you a good fit for their incubator is your interview. Continue reading to learn how to give incubator interview for Canada Startup Visa.
The structures and duration of the interview depends on the incubator and varies a little bit. Most of the interviews were 30 mins long, and you were expected to make a pitch using the pitch deck already shared with the incubator. After you finish your pitch, the incubator team will ask questions related to your startup just like any investor would. If you have pitched to investors before you won’t find this too different.
There were a few interviews which were not too organized, and the style was more conversational. The conversation here was more about the Founders and our experience and how we came about building the startup that we wanted to bring to Canada.
Personally, I have always liked conversation style more, instead of the more organized pitch with very specific topics and questions. I find it easier to manage and gives me an opportunity to control the direction of the conversation.
Incubators also have different styles in how they come to a decision. Some were panel interviews and some were taken by a single person. Most of the places would ask for a follow-up interview with a different team member. I think there was only one incubator where I had just one interview, and the gentleman conducting the interview basically communicated by the end that they would love to have us join their incubator.
The incubator that we ended up joining, we gave 5 interviews. I was initially rejected after the second interview, but they were kind enough to share feedback and why they felt they couldn’t accept my startup. I went back after a few weeks, after solving their concerns, and we ended up joining the program.
