The first thing you need to do after landing in Canada is apply for a SIN (Social Insurance Number).
You need your SIN number for a lot of things including phone plan, bank account & credit card.
There are 2 ways of applying for your SIN.
Online
You can apply for your SIN online. Just click the link and follow the process. It only requires your passport and work permit issued at the airport. After applying, your SIN should arrive in your mail within 10 days.
In person at Service Ontario
You can visit the nearest Service Ontario office and apply in person. The benefit is that you get your SIN in the same day. But be prepared to get in line and spend an hour or two to get this sorted.
What is a Social Insurance Number in Canada?
Basically, to work in Canada and get access to government benefits and programs, you need a SIN. It’s a 9-digit number, which you should keep private and not share with anyone unnecessarily. They used to send plastic cards, but now it’s just a piece of paper with your SIN on it. Keep it safe and memorize your SIN, you will need it a lot.
